The Edison Council recognized township resident Lora Fong, who was recently appointed chief diversity officer at the state attorney general's office.
EDISON -- The township council recently honored one of its own -- Lora Fong -- for earning her position as chief diversity officer at the state attorney general's office.
"We are honored that Ms. Lora Fong ... will be bringing positive national recognition to her hometown in her new role," according to the township's resolution presented at a city council meeting on Wednesday. The resolution was sponsored by Councilwoman Sapana Shah.
Fong served on the township Board of Education from 2012 to 2015 but did not seek re-election. She also served on Mayor Thomas Lankey's transition team immediately after this 2013 election.
A 1979 graduate of Rutgers University, who also served as a systems engineer at IBM, Fong was selected by the attorney general's office recently to fill the newly created role that will seek to address diversity at the department, according to the township's resolution.
"Lora Fong has been and continues to be a strong leader in our community," said Shah, an attorney and first Asian-American woman on the Edison Council. "She's brilliant, has a deep faith in humanity, and a lot of courage ... and we know that she will help so many people throughout the state."
Fong was not available for comment, but according to a report by Law.com, her responsibilities at the attorney general's office will include developing a broad diversity and inclusion plan, recruiting, coordinating with other departments and improving diversity training.
After graduating Rutgers Law School in 1991, Fong went on to practice law in New Jersey and in New York.
She was also general counsel and senior vice president at Diversity Inc., and she was in-house counsel for several Fortune 100 companies, according to the township.
