North Brunswick paid out $4,500 to Jason Dawkins last year to dismiss a suit filed in Essex County Superior Court in 2015
NORTH BRUNSWICK --The township has settled a lawsuit with a man who claims he was arrested without cause two years ago, according to court papers.
North Brunswick paid out $4,500 to Jason Dawkins last year to dismiss a suit filed in Essex County Superior Court, naming the police department and local officers, township records show. Information about the case was released in the last few days.
The settlement agreement, which denies any wrongdoing by either side, was made last March. The court eventually dismissed the suit on Nov. 18, 2016, costing the township $13,233 overall, including court and lawyer fees, the records show.
The suit claims Dawkins was wrongfully arrested and without a warrant while he was at work on Jan. 2, 2015, over a fraudulent check cashed at a federal credit union for $1,160. Police were investigating the fake check and had arrested Dawkins after watching surveillance footage at the credit union North Brunswick, according to the suit.
Another person, Erin Little, was also wrongfully charged during the investigation, the suit claims.
