WOODBRIDGE -- "Novus Initium," a team of students from Iselin Middle School, took first place at DiscoverE's Future City Competition, a contest that challenges middle school students to design and build a city of the future.

At the Future City Competition held Jan. 14 at Rutgers University in Piscataway, 80 teams took the challenge; the students researched, designed and wrote a solution to a real issue in the community based on this year's competition theme, "The Power of Public Space." The teams then used recycled materials to build a scale model of their city, which they then presented to a panel of judges.

"Sinking City," from Kenneth R. Olson Middle School in Tabernacle, took second place and "Soleia," from Hoboken Charter School in Hoboken, finished third.

Novus Initium will compete next month in the Future City Competition National Finals to be held in Washington, D.C.
