Travis Z. Wang, 24, was rescued and taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for evaluation following the incident. He was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and driving while intoxicated.

At approximately 3:53 a.m., a borough police officer who was running stationary radar in the lot of the post office heard the sound of a loud crash, police said.

The officer drove east on Canal Road toward Main Street to investigate and observed a metal fence missing from the front of the G.A.F. property at the intersection of Elizabeth Street and Canal Road, police said.

The officer then spotted debris and a vehicle at the edge of the D&R Canal that had run into the trees on top of a large rock. The heavily-damaged vehicle was dangerously close to going into the canal and a man was trapped inside, police said.

The Somerset County Dive team, South Bound Brook Fire Department, Somerset Fire Department, Bound Brook Police Department and medical personnel from Robert Wood Johnson assisted in removing Wang from his vehicle, police said.
