Walmart's insurer says the retail giant's settlement with the comedian was too generous and is fighting it
Walmart's insurance company is reportedly fighting the settlement the retail giant agreed to pay Tracy Morgan as a result of a 2014 crash on the New Jersey Turnpike that seriously injured the comedian and killed another man.
Morgan has 20 days to provide Ohio Casualty Insurance Company and Liberty Insurance Underwriters with financial documents following a New Jersey judge's ruling on Thursday, according to NYDailyNews.com.
The insurance company argues Walmart's settlement was too generous and that Morgan's future earnings weren't compromised as much as he claimed. Financial terms of the settlement have not been publicly disclosed.
The settlement with Morgan and Ardie Fuqua, who was also injured in the crash, might be around $90 million, NYDailyNews.com said. In a 2015 interview, fellow comedian Damon Wayans also threw out the $90 million figure.
The insurance company wants Morgan's tax returns from 2009 to 2014 and details on how much Morgan earned in appearances after the crash.
Morgan reached the settlement with Walmart in May 2015. That same year, he paid $13.9 million for a mansion in Alpine.
The July 7, 2014 crash on the Turnpike in Cranbury killed James McNair and injured Morgan and Fuqua. The three were riding in a limo bus following a show in Delaware when it was involved in a six-vehicle crash.
Walmart paid out $10 million to McNair's two children.
