SOUTH BRUNSWICK -- The fatal shooting at a mosque in Canada has prompted an increased police presence outside of one the largest local places of worship for Muslims in New Jersey.
Officers from the South Brunswick Police Department will be on hand nearly around the clock for the next few days at the Islamic Society of Central Jersey on Route 1, according to police.
"I have been in contact with members of the Islamic Society of Central Jersey and reassured them of our commitment," South Brunswick Police Chief Raymond Hayducka said in a statement. "We have enhanced our presence around the Mosque as both a deterrence and reassurance."
Although there have been no threats made, Hayducka said his department will continue to work with state and federal authorities to share information.
Police already have patrols at local religious locations, but have increased patrols out of an abundance of caution to reassure the community, Capt. Jim Ryan said.
Hayducka asks the community "to be vigilant." Anyone who sees anything unusual is asked to call (732) 329-4646 or 911.
