Driver dies after school bus crashes into tree in West Windsor

Police said the crash occurred at a relatively low speed and they're investigating if the driver had a medical attack at the wheel.

WEST WINDSOR -- The driver of a school bus that crashed into a tree in a neighborhood off Old Trenton Road Wednesday afternoon died at local hospital a short time later, police said.

Township police suspect the driver had a medical attack at the wheel, just before the 3:10 p.m. crash on Zaitz Farm Road.

The driver's identity was not made public Wednesday evening.  He had been taken to taken to University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro following the crash.

Seven West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South students were aboard the bus when it struck a tree branch, then a tree, police said. The impact occurred at a relatively low speed.

One 14-year-old girl suffered a minor wrist injury, but declined medical attention at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

Several of the students attempted to assist the driver following the crash, police spokesman Sgt. Mark Lee said.

West Windsor-Plainsboro Schools Superintendent Dr. David Adderhold responded to the scene to assist police, Lee said.

The crash is the second involving a fatality in the township Wednesday. A New York man was killed in the early morning when debris from a tractor trailer caused him to veer off Route 1 into trees.
