A woman was allegedly sexually assaulted by a man in Highland Park Sunday evening.
HIGHLAND PARK -- A gunman who allegedly severely beat and sexually assaulted a woman Sunday evening is still at large, officials said.
At about 5:30 p.m., the man approached the woman, 36, with a gun on Harper Street and forced her into the basement of a nearby apartment building, according to a statement from the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office. He then repeatedly punched her and sexually assaulted her before fleeing, the statement said.
The woman was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where she is listed in stable condition, according to officials.
The incident remains under investigation.
