The East Brunswick woman was charged with burglary, possession of a hypodermic syringe, and hindering apprehension
EAST BRUNSWICK -- A township woman has been arrested and charged with breaking into two homes last week and stealing thousands of dollars in gold dollar coins.
Amy Streko, 34, allegedly broke into homes on Milltown Road and Herbert Drive last Tuesday, according to a statement from police. Roughly $3,000 in gold dollar coins were reported taken from one of the homes, officials say.
It was not clear what -- if anything -- was taken from the other home.
She has been charged with burglary, possession of a hypodermic syringe that was later found by police and hindering apprehension for giving a false name to an officer when stopped. She also had an outstanding warrant from Somerset County, the statement said.
A surveillance camera system at the Milltown Road break-in had captured a photo of a woman inside his home, police said in the statement.
On Friday, an officer saw a woman walking on Ryders Lane who matched the description from the surveillance photo, according to officials. The woman -- later identified as Streko -- was stopped and found with the gold dollar coins on her, the statement said.
During a search of Streko's boyfriend's home -- where Streko had been staying -- authorities found an additional $500 in gold dollar coins and clothing matching what officials say Streko was wearing when she allegedly broke into the home on Milltown Road.
Officials in the statement said the resident's surveillance footage was pivotal in the arrest.
