Three men accused of fatally stabbing Enrique Perez Galindo appeared in court Tuesday for detention hearings.

NEW BRUNSWICK -- A father of four who was killed last month tried to chase his attackers after they stabbed him outside his New Brunswick apartment, according to an account prosecutors made public Tuesday.

Enrique Perez Galindo, 29, was covered in blood when he ran after three men in hoodies who stabbed him near his heart and stole his cash during a Feb. 25 robbery on Hamilton Street, county prosecutors said.

An assistant prosecutor described the brutal attack during detention hearings before state Superior Court Judge Pedro Jimenez in Middlesex County, where Manuel "Manny" Maldonado, Jose David "Sparky" Vasquez-Rivera and Xavier "Caballo" Sanchez-Parral face murder and robbery charges in Galindo's killing.

Nearby surveillance cameras captured the three men following Galindo and attacking him, and they showed one of the men thumbing through Galindo's wallet, Assistant Prosecutor Scott LaMountain said.

The men were also caught on video going into a local restaurant wearing the same hoodies they had worn during the attack, LaMountain said. He said New Brunswick police were familiar with two of the men from prior interactions, but he did not specify which two the officers knew.

Sanchez-Parral has admitted to robbery, and Maldonado admitted to robbery and having a knife, according to prosecutors.

Jimenez, the judge, agreed to detain Maldonado, 20, Vasquez-Rivera, 18, and Sanchez-Parral, 18, all of New Brunswick.

Ana Maria Giron Miranda, Galindo's wife, heard him banging on the door to their apartment around 2:30 a.m. on the day of the attack and went downstairs with their 10-year-old son to find him, relatives said last week.

The father of four supposedly said "They hit me" in Spanish and was pronounced dead about 10 minutes later, after first responders tried unsuccessfully to save him.

In addition to his 10-year-old son, Galindo had three other children who were 5 years old, 4 years old and 5 months old.

He immigrated from Mexico when he was 14 and worked in construction. Galindo's family said they plan to send his body to be buried in Oaxaca, Mexico, where his mother and sister live.
