SOUTH BRUNSWICK -- Two men have been arrested for a December burglary of a home in the Monmouth Junction section of town.

James O'Connor, 38, of North Brunswick was charged with burglary and theft, and Derrick McCaskill, 51, also of North Brunswick, was charged with conspiracy to commit burglary and theft, according to a statement from police.

On Dec. 23, a safe with jewelry and cash was stolen from a home in the Turnbury development, the statement said.

Police said O'Connor did handy work in the development in early December and was familiar with residents' schedules, according to the police statement.

In addition, police recovered video surveillance footage showing two suspects "manipulating video cameras in the area." The footage also showed "a unique looking silver-colored pickup truck with a box-shaped object resembling a safe in the bed of the truck." Detectives used the footage to track down the vehicle.

The men also used cardboard to hide the rear license plate of the vehicle, authorities said.

Search warrants obtained by authorities uncovered additional physical evidence that police say placed O'Connor and McCaskill at the scene in December.

Both O'Connor and McCaskill have been released until their next court appearance.
