While three-quarters of New Brunswick Middle School's approximately 1,300 students violated the dress code, 30 had to run outside

NEW BRUNSWICK -- A group of 30 New Brunswick Middle School students who violated the district's uniform policy were forced to run outside in December, according to a report on NewBrunswickToday.com.

While three-quarters of students showed up to school on Dec. 23 wearing clothes other than the required uniform, officials randomly chose 30 in grades six, seven and eight to run outside, the report said.

Principal Jeremiah Clifford instructed the students to run on the track at Memorial Stadium, across the street from the middle school on Joyce Kilmer Avenue in the city, the report said.

Students had a half-day of school that Friday, the final day before Christmas break.

Superintendent Aubrey Johnson confirmed the incident to New Brunswick Today, but declined to comment further.

The temperature in New Brunswick on Dec. 23 ranged from 34 to 47 degrees, according to AccuWeather.com.

The district's dress code was implemented in 2010. New Brunswick Middle School had 1,364 students enrolled in 2014-15, the most recent year for which data is available.
