NEW BRUNSWICK -- The Route 18 and Route 1 construction project in New Brunswick and East Brunswick will again cause ramp closures and detours this weekend, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The state, along with the East Brunswick and Rutgers University police departments, are warning motorists to find alternate routes beginning Friday night (tonight) at 8 p.m. and lasting until Monday morning, Nov. 9, 2015, until 5 a.m. while crews, weather permitting, work on replacing the Route 18 bridge over Route 1.

Police said two lanes of traffic will be open on Route 18 north and south, using various movable barrier systems, but police "highly recommend" that "commuters plan alternate routes" over the weekend.

The ramp to Route 18 south from Route 1 south will be closed the entire weekend. The ramp to Route 18 north from Route 1 north will also be closed the entire weekend. The ramp to Route 1 south from Route 18 north will be closed overnight tonight and tomorrow (Saturday) night.

One lane of Route 18 northbound traffic will be diverted onto the southbound bridge using a movable barrier system, but each direction will lose a lane as construction crews prepare to install new pieces of bridge.

Dan Triana, a spokesman for the Department of Transportation, said this could be  the final weekend closure related to the reconstruction of the Route 18 bridge, weather permitting.
