CRANBURY -- The state Attorney General's office is investigating a fatal shooting at the Molly Pitcher Service Area on the New Jersey Turnpike involving a State Trooper, according to authorities.
State Police were conducting an investigation at the rest stop at about 2:45 p.m. when a trooper shot and killed a man, who was in a pickup truck, the Attorney General's Office said in a release.
The man, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said.
No troopers were injured in the incident.
No further details were made available. The Attorney General's shooting response team, which handles the investigation whenever a state or county police officer fires their weapon, is still investigating the incident.
The details of the State Police investigation were not known.
Police tape has been rolled out around most of the front side of the parking lot of the rest stop and investigators can be seen walking the blocked off area. Inside the rest stop is quiet with only two stranded travelers.
Authorities appear to be focusing their investigation near the front of the lot where vehicles enter and exit. A pickup with a smashed front end can be seen in the area that crashed into a guardrail.
State Police Trooper Alejandro Goez previously referred all questions to the state attorney general's office.
Authorities closed the rest stop just before 3:30 p.m. NJ Advance reporters on scene said the exit to the rest stop was blocked off.
