Veterans honored at Mass.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK -- As the veterans left their pews to march out after Mass, the congregation rose to its feet. Applause started slowly but soon filled the church.

St. Cecilia's Church in South Brunswick was packed Sunday morning to honor those who have served and continue to serve in the armed forces.

"We celebrate you, our heroes today," said Father Charles O'Connor.

O'Connor came to the parish three years ago and started the event.

"We need to remember the freedoms that we have through their service," O'Connor said. Veterans needed to be thanked, he added.

Veterans paraded into the service with an honor guard and an escort of the Knights of Columbus. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines all followed service flags and sat together as individual service groups.

"It's a terrific way to honor all the veterans," said Steve Koons, who served in the Navy for 25 years.

The Knights of Columbus St. Cecilia chapter and VFW Post 9111 assisted in the ceremony. Veterans Day is Wednesday.
