UPDATE: 28-year-old man killed after driving off Parkway into tree
CRANFORD -- A driver was killed early Friday after his car veered off the Garden State Parkway in Union County and slammed into a tree, police said.
The investigation into the single-car crash northbound at milepost 137.8 in Cranford caused massive delays in both directions through the morning rush.
The identity of the driver killed was not released pending notification of his family, Trooper Alejandro Goez said.
The man was northbound in a Toyota sedan around 6 a.m. when he veered off the right side of the road and hit a tree, Goez said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two right lanes on the northbound side were closed through much of the morning rush, causing at least eight miles of delays. The southbound traffic was also jammed at least six miles by rubbernecking.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
