A New Brunswick birthday party left two brothers and their father stabbed.

NEW BRUNSWICK -- The stabbing outside a birthday party early Sunday that left two brothers and their father injured began when three men emerged from a cab and jumped one of the brothers, family members said Monday.

The fight escalated quickly as the other brother and father intervened, family members. That's when one of the attackers pulled a knife and started slashing.

Gabriel Galindo-Fernandez, 27, of New Brunswick, has since been arrested and charged in the stabbing, according to police. It was unclear Tuesday if the other two men the family says jumped from the cab have been charged.

The brother who was celebrating his 30th birthday had a deep gash across the back of his head held closed by nine staples as he recounted the attack on his porch Monday night.

"When I noticed that they were hitting my brother, I got involved," the man said in Spanish. As the victim of an alleged crime, his name is being withheld.

The man said his brother was walking a girl to her car at 2:45 a.m. when the men jumped from the cab and confronted him. Once he and his father saw the fight unfolding, they came to help and the stabbing occurred, he said.

The three men fled after someone yelled that they were calling the police.

Authorities later apprehended Galindo-Fernandez and charged him with aggravated assault and related weapons charges, police said.

The stabbed man said he did not know the three men or why they came to the home.
