Officials said police followed protocol, set up a perimeter around the house and called in a counselor, negotiator
CARTERET -- A borough man refused to come out of his house Wednesday evening because of his outstanding warrants, causing a four-hour standoff with police, officials said.
Police arrived at the John Street house at about 7:49 p.m. after receiving a call reporting a disturbance at the residence and asked the man to put his pit bull in the house so they could talk with him, Carteret police Deputy Chief Dennis McFadden said in a release.
The man, who was not identified, went into the house, locked the doors and told police through a window they needed to come back with a search warrant, according to the release.

McFadden said police followed protocol, set up a perimeter around the house and called in a negotiator from the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.
The man, who was wanted on multiple warrants out of Linden and Carteret municipal courts, eventually came out peacefully after police assured him he'd be taken to a hospital for his health problems, police said.
"Based upon the police investigation at the scene, no illegal weapons were seized, no hostage situation was identified and no gun shots had been fired," the police department said in a statement.
A video from News 12, shows the man walk out on his porch, place his cell phone on the ground, and raise his hands.
"While the CPD doesn't comment on every incident we felt it appropriate to issue a statement about this incident because of the inaccurate reporting by media and the false public alarm being circulated via social media," the statement said.
