"S. Klein on the Square" not only said where it was located, but also suggested it was owned by an honest businessman who offered a square deal.
WOODBRIDGE -- In this 1960s photo, a family stands near their car in front of S. Klein at 675 Route 1 in Woodbridge.
The store, which sold everything from food to furniture, opened on Nov. 11, 1963.
In a 2013 article on nj.com, Tom DePoto pointed out that "the chain began as a store run by Sam Klein, a tailor, at Union Square in New York City. 'S. Klein on the Square' not only said where it was located, but also suggested it was owned by an honest businessman who offered a square deal."

The S. Klein chain eventually grew to 19 stores with some as far south as Maryland and Virginia. "By the early 1970s," DePoto wrote, "store ownership had changed hands several times and the chain had fallen on hard times."
The Woodbridge location closed in the mid-1970s; A Toys "R" Us, Raymour & Flanigan furniture store and a Best Buy electronics store today fill the former S. Klein site.
