Children as young as six were victims, police said
WOODBRIDGE -- A school bus aide from Avenel was arrested Monday after police said she stole money from disabled children aged six to nine.
Police began investigating Dec. 11 after receiving information that money had been taken from five children attending Woodbridge schools.
A source familiar with the incident said the board of education notified police as soon as they learned of it.
The money was supposed to be used for class trips, department spokesman Capt. Roy Hoppock said.
An investigation led to the arrest Candice Milford, 30, who was charged with nine counts of theft by unlawful taking or disposition. She was being held at the Middlesex County Correctional Facility on $75,000 bail.
"Although the district is prohibited from speaking directly about personnel issues, the board [of education] takes matters such as these very seriously," the district's attorney, Jonathan Busch, said.
