EDISON -- In a scene more reminiscent of the television show "The Wire" than the state's fifth-largest town, Edison cops arrested three men, one of whom was allegedly armed with a shotgun and wearing a bulletproof vest, near a housing development on Tuesday.
Police said they seized 120 decks of heroin, a sawed-off shotgun, and $550 in cash in the arrest near the Robert Holmes Gardens development in North Edison.
"These arrests took several armed, potentially-dangerous suspects off our streets and they emphasize how valuable it is when watchful residents alert our department to criminal activity in their neighborhoods," Police Chief Thomas Bryan said in a written statement. "Community vigilance works hand-in-hand with good police work."

Police say they responded to a tip about drug sales and set up surveillance on Beaver Avenue, watching as three men allegedly made drug deals on Beaver Avenue.
Police arrested Alex Green, 44 of Jersey City; Terence L. Chatman, 46, of Orlando, Florida, and Rasheed Abdulla, 24, of Colonia.
Chatman was charged with possession of a shotgun and controlled dangerous substances, unlawful use of body armor, and unlawful possession of a firearm. He had several outstanding warrants, police said. Bail was $50,000.
Green was charged with possession and distribution of heroin, possession of rug paraphernalia and possession of a firearm, as well as drug dealing within 50 feet of a public housing facility. Bail was set at $100,000.
Abdulla was charged with possession and distribution of heroin, firearms possession and loitering to obtain controlled dangerous substances, police said.
