The unidentified victim is believed to have jumped from a bridge crossing the Raritan River last month

SOUTH AMBOY - Authorities say a body found on the shore of the Raritan River Saturday was likely a suicide victim.

In a statement, South Amboy police said a man walking along the beach when he noticed the body lying face down in the sand. He later called police, who teamed with the Middlesex County Medical Examiner's office to remove it from the beach.

Authorities declined to release the person's identity, saying they had yet to reach family members.

However, police said it likely belonged to a person who committed suicide by jumping off one of the nearby bridges that crosses the Raritan River.

An 2013 report by NJ.com found that suicide calls from the Victory Bridge, which connects South Amboy to Sayreville, had surged in recent years, including more than 20 completed attempts since 2005.

The following year, the state installed fences along the bridge in hopes of preventing people from taking their own lives.
