EDISON -- The largest township in Middlesex County has 32 heavily populated square miles to keep clear, and a Department of Public Works that is dealing with a series of challenges.
But township officials say they are ready to take on a winter storm that could dump more than a foot on Central Jersey.
"We are keeping a very close watch on the approaching snowstorm," said Maureen Ruane, the town's business administrator. "Snowfall predictions for Central Jersey seem to vary hour-to-hour. Edison certainly hopes for the best, but we are preparing for the worst."

Edison has not had a DPW director for months since the former head of the department retired. And almost a year ago, the town lost much of its snow-clearing equipment in a devastating DPW fire. It was the fourth fire at the DPW facility in four years; a previous fire had destroyed the town's road salt supplies.
The township has replaced that snow-clearing equipment, however. And Edison is also expected to hire a DPW director in the coming days or weeks.
The town has 59 plow trucks, plus a 1,800-ton stockpile of salt ready to go.
"Plows are already attached to our fleet of heavy-duty municipal vehicles," Ruane said. "Our salt spreaders are ready to go. Most importantly, our public works employees are on stand-by ready to brave this first winter storm."
