EAST BRUNSWICK -- The local Democrats have put forward three candidates to serve as mayor for the rest of the year.
On Monday, the Republican-controlled council will pick either Kevin McEvoy, Deborah Cornavaca, or Edward Janzekovich to replace the outgoing mayor. David Stahl became a judge in Woodbridge.
Then, the race is on for another four-year term in November in this swing town.
McEvoy is a member of the school board. Cornavaca is the president of the library board of trustees. And Janzekovich is a retired police lieutenant and attorney.
East Brunswick Democrats got to pick an interim replacement for Stahl because although he switched to the Republican Party, he was first elected as a Democrat. But the Republican-majority council will pick one of the Democrats to serve out the rest of the year.
The town's business administrator, James White, is currently serving as acting mayor.

Michael Hughes, the council president, said the local GOP hasn't yet settled on its own candidates for November.
"That's a discussion that our party is currently having," Hughes said. "I'm sure we're going to put forth the strongest slate possible."
