Piscataway students build a puzzle for National Puzzle Day.
PISCATAWAY --Jan. 29 was National Puzzle Day, an unofficial holiday that puzzle enthusiasts celebrate with a variety of puzzle-themed events and activities.
Nicole Elmini, a teacher at the Nu View Academy, saw Puzzle Day as an opportunity for a lesson. She thought creating a puzzle would give her students the chance to use logic and build their social skills as they worked together to create a puzzle. The Nu View Academy is one of seven Middlesex Regional Educational Services Commission schools. It serves students ages 5 to 21 with depression, anxiety or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
"Each student received a large, blank puzzle piece, and were encouraged to decorate it in a way that appealed to them," said Elmini of her Puzzle Day lesson. The students each decorated their own puzzle piece and then worked together to fit the pieces together, forming a large rectangle approximately 10 feet long and 2 feet wide.
"The students were engaged and seemed to enjoy the project," said Elmini.
