WOODBRIDGE -- Two township police officers were charged Friday with providing false information during the investigation of a motor vehicle crash that involved a third officer.
Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey and Woodbridge Police Director Robert Hubner said Officer David Hughes, 30, of the Port reading section of Woodbridge, was charged with falsifying or tampering with records and tampering with public records.
Carey said Hughes' partner, Officer Amanda Felicies, 29, of the Fords section of the township, was charged with false swearing for lying to authorities during the investigating into the crash.
Both officers were released on their own recognizance and have been suspended.
Carey said an investigation by the police department determined Hughes and Felicies were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on May 23, 2015.
Carey said an off-duty officer, whose name is being withheld, was traveling north on Route 9 and was getting onto West Pond Road when his sport utility vehicle jumped the curb, was damaged and could not be driven.
Prosecutors said Hughes filed a false report on May 23, to protect the unnamed officer. Felicies subsequently provided false information under oath on Jan. 19 to police who were investigating the crash, the prosecutor said.
Carey said the investigation is active and continuing.
