Delays remain after a person was struck and killed by an NJ Transit train early Tuesday morning.
NORTH BRUNSWICK TWP. -- NJ Transit NEC trains are back or close to running on schedule after an Amtrak employee was struck and killed by an NJ Transit train early Tuesday morning, a spokesman for Amtrak said.
The worker for the federal train agency was struck around 4:45 a.m. not far from the Jersey Avenue station in New Brunswick, according to Craig Schulz, a spokesman for Amtrak, which is leading the investigation because the incident happened on the company's tracks.
No further information on the employee was available, pending notification of the family, officials said.
"There were no injuries to any passengers or crew aboard the train," Schulz later added in an email.
The circumstances of the death are not known at this time, but the matter remains under investigation.
Long delays for rail riders after death
Following the fatality, service had been briefly suspended between Trenton and Princeton Junction with heavy delays of up to 70 minutes at Service between Trenton and Metropark, previous reports said.
"Northeast Corridor passengers traveling between Philadelphia and New York experienced delays of up to an hour earlier this morning, but trains are not on or close to schedule," Schulz noted in his email.
Around 9:30 a.m, there were several NJ Transit police vehicles posted alongside the tracks with officials walking the area where the person was struck and killed, officials said.
