Smoke and loud booms fill the sky as firefighters battle truck blaze.
Firefighters battled a blaze that engulfed a tractor trailer carrying barrels of unknown chemicals on Route 9 in Woodbridge as the sky filled with smoke and several loud booms were heard shortly before 10 am. this morning.
There were no injuries in the fire, which firefighters were able to extinguish readily, according to Woodbridge Police Department Captain Roy Hoppock.
As of 11 a.m. Route 9 south remains closed while hazmat crews determine exactly what kind of chemicals were inside the barrels, Hoppock said.
The truck, a tractor trailer carrying a green container bearing the name of the Evergreen shipping line, sat ablaze in the southbound lanes near the interchange with Route 1 just north of the Woodbridge Center Mall.
Moment of road rage could result in years in prison
Iselin Fire Department firefighters arrived and appeared to have the fire under control within a few minutes, but not before several loud booms that send onlookers scurrying, with Woodbridge police clearing the scene warning of an imminent explosion.
Information on whether there were any injuries were unavailable. This story will be updated as information is made available.
