Of the 24 recruits that completed the Basic Course for County Corrections Officers, 10 will stay at home in Monmouth County and serve at the county's jail.

FREEHOLD -- Two-dozen recruits graduated from the Monmouth County Police Academy last week and will now become corrections officers, the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office announced.

Of the 24 recruits that completed the Basic Course for County Corrections Officers, 10 will stay at home in Monmouth County and serve at the county's jail. Nine of the recruits will head to the Middlesex Department of Corrections while seven will serve at the Union County Department of Corrections.

"It takes dedication, courage and compassion to have a career in law enforcement," said Sheriff Shaun Golden. "As these corrections officers join the ranks of professional men and women, those values will guide them in safeguarding lives and property and preserving peace in a correctional environment."

The graduation is the culmination of a 12-week intense curriculum that includes training in self-defense and emergency management, law-enforcement ethics, stress management and physical drills, among other training courses.

Monmouth County Freeholder Lillian G. Burry spoke highly of the graduates' dedication to public service.

"This is a proud moment for the graduates and their family members," Burry said. "These corrections officers selected a career in public service and made a commitment to serve others. It's not always the easiest course, but it's the right one."

Sgt. Byron Jones of the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office, who will be retiring soon, coordinates the Basic Course for County Corrections Officers. He was recognized at the graduation ceremony for his exceptional work.
