Authorities say a Monroe surrendered to police after a domestic violence incident in his home where a woman suffered a head injury.
MONROE -- A township man with a criminal record now faces attempted murder charges for a domestic violence incident in his home Friday that resulted in a woman being taken to a hospital with a head injury, authorities said.
Robert A. Witkowski, 47, surrendered to police after a stand-off at his home that lasted more than three hours, Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey and Monroe police Chief Michael Lloyd said in a statement Monday.
In addition to attempted murder, Witkowski is charged with aggravated assault, aggravated assault during an incident of domestic violence, possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, criminal mischief, hindering his apprehension and committing an offense as a previously convicted felon, Carey and Lloyd said.
More than 20 law enforcement officers from the prosecutor's Special Operations Response Team, or SORT, were dispatched shortly after Monroe police received a call at 9:34 a.m. Friday, authorities said.
Officers discovered a man, later identified as Witkowski, had barricaded himself himself in the house, the prosecutor said.
He said Witkowski surrendered at 12:55 p.m. following negotiations with SORT officers.
Once inside the home, officers found a woman on the second floor who was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick and treated for a head injury.
No details were released today on the condition of the woman.
Carey credited police with resolving a potentially dangerous situation by convincing Witkowski to surrender. No shots were fired during the incident and no police officers were injured, the prosecutor said.
He did not identify the address of the house or say if the man and woman lived there.
Members of the Manalapan Police Department and the Monmouth County Sheriff's Department assisted at the scene, Carey said.
Witkowski is being held on $350,000 bail.
