The search for the remains of a newborn born baby has been unsuccessful and his parents are in jail.
NEW BRUNSWICK -- An extensive search has failed to turn up the remains of a newborn baby allegedly disposed of by a city couple last week, authorities said.
"After an extensive search, the body was not found," said James O'Neill, spokesman for the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.
The child's parents, Jaciel Torres-Lopez, 34, and Mercedes Sanchez-Porres, 30, have been charged with hindering an investigation into the death of their newborn and desecration of human remains.
The two were charged May 19, although Torres-Lopez has been held at the Middlesex County jail since May 17 after he was charged with hindering for lying to police during the investigation in the baby's whereabouts.
Sanchez-Torres was admitted to St. Peter's University Hospital in New Brunswick and admitted she gave birth to a male infant. However, the child did not come to the hospital with her, Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey said. Sanches-Torres was charged at the hospital.
Bail was set at $100,000 for each defendant.
Police authorized an excavation of sewer line at the couple's home on Remsen Avenue on May 17 and began a search of Edgeboro Landfill in East Brunswick on May 18.
