Police were continuing to monitor a "medium-sized bear" Tuesday afternoon.

WOODBRIDGE -- Police said they were continuing to monitor a medium-sized bear Tuesday afternoon that had been roaming the Iselin-section of the township near a middle school since the morning.

"We are keeping an eye on him," said lt. Richard Hardish, of the Woodbridge Police Department. "He is bedded down in a wooded area."

He added that the bear hadn't been causing any problems."He's doing his natural thing."

"He's doing his natural thing," Hardish said.

The Woodbridge School District issued a statement around 3 p.m. saying the bear the bear was sighted around the "Iselin neighborhood of Middlesex Avenue and Goodrich Street" and that it "could affect bus students from Iselin Middle School."

"We suggest parents meet their children at the bus stop, the statement said. "Police are on the scene and may have to redirect where buses stop."

Hardish said, however, that routes ended up not needing to be altered.

Hardish said the bear had roamed through a couple backyards but that no one was harmed.

Calls about the bear were first reported around 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to Hardish.

Hardish said the state Division of Fish and Wildlife had been notified.
