Monroe police are warning residents of an IRS phone scam.
MONROE TWP. -- Police are warning residents of an IRS phone scam going around.
Authorities issued a statement on Tuesday saying that "multiple attempts have been made to defraud our residents over the telephone" in which a caller claiming to be a representative of the IRS or U.S. Treasury Department "states that the victim owes back taxes."
"These are not legitimate phone calls and NO personal information (name, social security number, date of birth or financial accounts) should be shared with anyone over the telephone," officials wrote in the statement.
Anyone with questions about their federal or state taxes should be referred to the IRS or the New Jersey Division of Taxation.
