In the wake of several animal abuse cases in recent months, Edison police have donated patrol vehicles to the state SPCA.
EDISON -- Following several animal hoarding and abuse cases in recent months, the Edison Police Department has decided to donate two decommissioned patrol cars to the New Jersey SPCA, which is based in New Brunswick.
The police department donated two 2007 Ford Crown Victorias, which were recently decommissioned after years of steady use, said Edison police Lt. Robert Dudash Jr. in a statement.
"With so many high-profile animal cruelty cases in the news recently across our state, Edison is proud to support the NJSPCA's dedicated officers and agents who ensure the safety and welfare of animals and pets," said Police Chief Thomas Bryan in the statement.
The two vehicles were given to state SPCA Cpl. Frank Rizzo and Officer Tim Kennedy.
Earlier this week, a Woodbridge pet shop owner charged in December with animal cruelty pleaded guilty to animal health care violations, according to a previous report.
Also this week, more than 50 cats, including 12 dead, were removed from an apartment in Iselin. In Monmouth County, 36 cats were removed from a property after authorities responded to a complaint of animal cruelty.
"These donations underscore Edison's collaborative relationship with NJSPCA officers who work closely with our Animal Shelter staff to provide valuable community services," said Mayor Thomas Lankey, in the statement.
Lankey added that he hoped area residents and pet lovers consider private contributions to the township's animal shelter and the NJSPCA, which is a nonprofit organization that is funded solely by donations, grants, fines and penalties, among others.
