Officials said that as of Friday more than 50 cats had been removed from an Iselin apartment.

WOODBRIDGE -- As of Friday, officials said they have removed more than 50 cats from an Iselin apartment that several agencies responded to earlier this week, according to a township spokesman.

The Woodbridge Animal Control removed 40 cats that were alive and 12 cats that were dead.

Officials initially responded to the Harrowsgate apartment complex on Gill Lane Tuesday where they found a "large number of cats" in an apartment that was covered in urine and feces.

Officials said on Wednesday that the Woodbridge Health Department inspectors reported "inhumane conditions due to the accumulation of debris, urine and animal feces."

"We are fully involved in clearing the property of debris and will continue to trap (Haveahart trap) and remove any live animals," said township spokesman John Hagerty in an email.

Several of the cats were taken to the Woodbridge Animal Shelter, according to township Mayor John McCormac on Friday. The exact number of cats taken to the facility is not known at this time.

Hagerty said earlier this week the condition of the residence was such that it had become a health, safety and welfare issue "due to the large amount and heavy smell of urine, feces and dead animals throughout the apartment."

It is not known if any charges have been filed against the owners of the apartment, June and Richard Dennis.
