BAYONNE -- Friends of a city man who was fatally stabbed early Monday morning in Woodbridge said he was known for his generosity, his "good heart" and his aptitude for achieving his goals.

Pablo Caamano, 33, was pronounced dead at 4:07 a.m. after police located a vehicle parked on Randolph Avenue in Woodbridge, Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey said in a statement.

Caamano's close friend of 13 years, Matt Hojnacki, told The Jersey Journal this morning that it's an "understatement" to say Caamano would've given the shirt off his back to anyone.

"He's a good person. He was kind and gentle. He never said no," the 30-year-old said, at times overcome with emotion while sitting on the front steps of Caamano's Avenue B home.

Hojnacki lives in the same apartment building as Caamano, who owned the 2.5-story building.

One time, Hojnacki said, when he was stuck in New York City at 4 a.m. because of a car crash, he called Caamano for help.

"First thing he said, 'Where you at? I'll come get you. No problem, no big deal,'" Hojnacki recounted, even though Caamano had to drive for hours to get to where Hojnacki was.

Aside from his generosity, Caamano was known for being successful at whatever he put his mind to, according to Hojnacki. That included running his own painting business, among other endeavors, the 30-year-old said.

"Pablo's the ultimate entrepreneur," he said. "He could take any situation and turn it into a positive one."

Hojnacki's 27-year-old brother David, who lives with him, called Caamano "one of the greatest men I know." Another tenant in Caamano's building said he was "very friendly and fair."

Meanwhile, Caamano's longtime friend Jack Howells called him a "class act." Caamano once worked as a bartender at Howells' bar, Pair of Jacks, at 37th Street and Broadway, the 42-year-old said.

"He did it for fun, he didn't need the money. He did it because he's an outgoing guy," Howells said.

In a statement about Caamano's fatal stabbing, the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office said Amarlis Calderon, 32, of Bayonne, has been charged with tampering with evidence and two counts of hindering police for lying to investigators and disposing of a knife. Her last name was initially reported as Valderon.

Calderon is being held on a $75,000 bail and autopsy results for Caamano are still pending, the prosecutor's office said.

The prosecutor's office couldn't immediately be reached this afternoon for an update on the case.

Anyone with information about the stabbing is asked to call Sgt. Frank Robina of the New Jersey State Police at (609) 947-6024, or Detective Craig Marchak of the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office at (732) 745-3254.
