Hundreds enjoy South Plainfield's annual Labor Day Parade.

SOUTH PLAINFIELD -The borough celebrated Labor Day this morning the same way it has for 59 years, with a parade.

As hundreds of people gathered, parade participants, led by the South Plainfield High School Marching Band, stepped off from the Police Athletic League building

The storied parade was just one part of the borough's day long festivities. Before the parade, runners participated in a 5K Race. The celebration concludes tonight with fireworks at about 9 pm.

The parade theme this year was "90 years of Red Carpet-Movies, Music, Theater" in celebration of the borough's 90th birthday, according to officials with the South Plainfield Public Celebrations Committee.

Nicole Marshall of Piscataway said she brought her 5-year-old son Steeler Marshall to watch the parade, adding she has brought him every year since he was an infant. This year she said she wasn't sure if the parade would be canceled because of Tropical Storm Hermine.

"I thought the whole weekend would be a wash out,", Nicole said.  "It's a nice way to end the summer before school starts," she added.
