CARTERET -- Authorities say they are investigating a homicide in which a borough man was beaten to death last week, according to a statement from the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.

Hector W. Torres, 59, was found dead last week in a home Torres rented on Holly Street in the borough. The county Medical Examiner's Office later determined Torres died from a "blunt impact injury to his head."

Police responded to the two-family house on Oct. 11 at around 11:30 p.m. after an unidentified witness contacted authorities, the statement said. Torres, who lived on the first floor of the home, was pronounced dead roughly a half hour later.

The homicide was not disclosed until Tuesday "for investigative reasons," the statement said.

The investigation is being conducted by Det. Thomas O'Connor, of the Carteret Police Department, and Det. Joseph Chesseri, of the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.

Anyone with information on the homicide can contact O'Connor at 732-541-3863 or Chesseri at 732-745-3115.
