The express train from Washington, D.C., to Boston was heading through the station area when a spokesman said it struck someone on the tracks. The Amtrak train was held, and NJ Transit trains bypassed the station

EDISON -- A person was struck and killed by an Amtrak express train in Edison on Sunday night, disrupting service on Northeast Corridor line, officials said.

The person killed, who was not identified, was on the tracks in the area of the Edison Train Station at 7:20 p.m., when struck by Amtrak Train 2262, an express train from Washington, D.C. to Boston, said Mike Tolbert, an Amtrak spokesman.

The train, which had 249 passengers aboard, stopped at the station and was still being held after 9 p.m., while the crash was investigated, Tolbert said.

The person killed was not identified. Tolbert did not have details on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Edison Police referred questions to Amtrak.

NJ Transit service was suspended at the Edison station as a result of the incident,  and eastbound Northeast Corridor trains were forced to bypass the New Brunswick and Metuchen Stations, said NJ Transit spokeswoman Nancy Snyder.

Eastbound passengers trying to get to either of those stations were advised to continue on to MetroPark, then get off and take a westbound train back to New Brunswick or Metuchen.
