9 tips to protect your holiday packages from thieves

The South Brunswick Police Department is offering some tips to keep your holiday packages safe and sound.

MIDDLESEX COUNTY -- Online shopping sales this holiday season are expected to top $100 billion for the first time, according to Forrester Research, a market research company.

The South Brunswick and Middlesex Borough police departments have offer 9 tips to help you keep those online goodies from being stolen from your doorstep.

  1. Request a "signature delivery option," to ensure your package isn't left at your front door without a signature.
  2. If you're not sure when you'll be home, schedule a specific drop-off date and time with your carrier.
  3. Find out where you can arrange to have your packages held at a shipping service for later pick up.
  4. Delivery carriers can be more personal and flexible than you might think. If you're not home, and the delivery service has your cellphone number, they are often willing to leave packages at the side or back door or behind a hidden area you know will be safe.
  5. You can also arrange to have packages delivered to your relative's home or to an entrusted neighbor.
  6. You can also ask that dependable neighbor to keep a look out for your packages to hold until you later return.
  7. You can sign up for accounts with carriers like the U.S. Postal Service, FedEx, and UPS, which offer detailed tracking updates and the option to submit special instructions, like holding a package before going out for delivery.
  8. Don't leave your packages unattended in your vehicles.
  9. And lastly, if you see something you think is suspicious, you can report it to the South Brunswick Police Department by calling 732-329-4646.
