UPDATE: Route 9 reopens in Old Bridge after 20-hour closure
OLD BRIDGE -- A motor vehicle crash knocked down wires Saturday night and has left Route 9 closed in both directions Sunday, police said.
Two vehicles collided in the southbound lanes near an NJ Transit Park and Ridge, Old Bridge Police Officer Ronald Atlak said.
One of the cars knocked down a utility pole, causing wires to hang low over the northbound lanes, Atlak said. A tractor-trailer and box truck ran into the wires, dragging them along the highway and pulling down three more utility poles, police said.
"Which just created a mess," Atlak said.
No one was seriously hurt, police said.
Route 9 was still closed between Perrine and Ernston roads as of 12:15 p.m. Sunday. Verizon and Jersey Central Power & Light were making repairs, Atlak said. It's not clear when the highway will open.
A detour is in place, but heavy traffic is expected, the state Department of Transportation said.
