NEW BRUNSWICK -- More than 220 Middlesex County high school juniors and seniors converged upon Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick on Oct. 13 to take part in the hospital's Safety Ambassador Program Safety Summit.
The program teaches student Safety Ambassadors about strategies and tips on preventing injuries, which they will then share with the first- and second-graders in their districts to help keep them safe.
Among the topics discussed at this year's Safety Summit were pedestrian safety, fall prevention, safety in and around cars and wheeled sports.
"One of the reasons this program is so effective is because six- and seven-year-old children really look up to the high school students. While mom or dad may tell the little ones to wear a helmet, they will actually listen and hear the message differently when it is coming from a 'cool teenager,'" SAP coordinator Carol Lavitt said.
