Old Bridge man gets 18 years in beating death of his mother

Jamaar Best-Figueroa, 27, pleaded guilty last week to a count of aggravated manslaughter in the August 2013 of Shauna Figueroa, 52. He has agreed to serve up to 18 years in prison, officials said.

OLD BRIDGE - A township man who beat his mother so severely she lapsed into a coma and died three months later will serve up to 18 years in prison, authorities said Monday.

Jamaar Best-Figueroa, 27, pleaded guilty last week to a count of aggravated manslaughter in the August 2013 of Shauna Figueroa, 52. He has agreed to serve up to 18 years in prison, officials said.

The assault occurred May 30, 2013 in the Figueroa home on Englishtown Road in Old Bridge. Shauna Figueroa was taken unconscious and with head injuries and severe blood loss to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

Best-Figueroa fled the scene but was arrested on June 1.

His mother was transferred from Robert Wood to hospice care in Long Branch, where she died months later after being taken off life-support systems.

Under a plea agreement reached with Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Julie Davidson, Best-Figueroa will be sentenced to serve up to 18 years in state prison with no chance of parole until he completes 85 percent of his sentence.

Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 14.
