New Brunswick issued an alert to residents who may be experiencing discolored water.

NEW BRUNSWICK -- The city on Thursday told residents it wasn't necessary to boil yellow, discolored water they may be experiencing from a water main break in the afternoon on Voorhees Road.

The alert went out on social media, advising residents in the Rutgers Village and Edgebrook neighborhoods.

On its Facebook page, the city wrote, "neighborhoods may be experiencing discoloration with their water due to a main break ... It is not necessary to boil water at this time."

However, the city noted that "residents are advised not to do laundry if their water is discolored."

New Brunswick Today posted a video on its Facebook page from a resident in the Rutgers Village neighborhood depicting yellow water that came from a faucet.

The city also issued a statement on its website Thursday on a separate matter regarding elevated levels of total trihalomethanes (TTHMs) found in the city's drinking water over the summer.

"Samples taken in early August showed unusually high levels above 80 ppb at three testing sites, which resulted in a violation and subsequent notices to the public," Thursday's statement said.

However, the city said that it had "immediately implemented a number of successful measures to reduce" the levels.

The city again said that residents did not need to take any measures such as boiling water.

But, it noted, "if you have a severely compromised immune system, have an infant, are pregnant, or are elderly, you may be at increased risk and may wish to seek advice from your health care providers."
