Carolyn Sheldon was struck by two vehicles as she attempted to cross Route 1 in North Brunswick, police said.
NORTH BRUNSWICK -- A 76-year-old North Brunswick woman was struck by two vehicles and killed Wednesday night as she attempted to cross Route 1, police said.
North Brunswick police identified the victim as Carolyn Sheldon and said that she was struck in the slow lane by the first vehicle, driven by Sergio Benitez, 43, of Union City, around 10:30 p.m.
Benitez remained at the scene and was not charged with any crime, police said.
Police, however, are seeking the driver of a second vehicle they say struck Sheldon and fled. Two witnesses described the fleeing vehicle as an SUV, police said, but the witnesses did not have further information about the make or color.
Sheldon was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are attempting to gather surveillance footage from local businesses in the area and the incident remains under investigation. They ask anyone with information about this incident to contact Officer Katsoulis at 732-247-0922 ext. 317.
