MIDDLESEX -- Fire departments in Middlesex County battled two fires under freezing conditions Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning.
The first, reported in North Brunswick just after 6 p.m., was caused by a stove at a home on Grissom Avenue, officials said in a Facebook post with a video of the blaze.
It took the volunteer fire companies almost an hour to put it out, the post said.
Later that night, another house fire was reported by a neighbor on Copper Avenue in the Iselin section of Woodbridge Township, fire Capt. Roy Hoppock said in a release.
All of the residents safely made it out of the home with the help of neighbor John Leo, who pulled a ladder from his truck and put it up to the second floor so one of the three occupants could climb out, Hoppock said.
The cause of the blaze that started at 1:24 a.m. Wednesday was not known, according to Hoppock.
Both of the fires are under investigation by local fire marshals.
