Middlesex Superior Court Judge Dennis Nieves sentenced Rolando Martinez Sanchez, 25, to three years in state prison Friday morning
NEW BRUNSWICK - A city man who opened fire on a group of men in New Brunswick three years ago killing a bystander was sentenced Friday to three years in prison.
Rolando Martinez Sanchez, 25, accepted a plea deal last month on a lesser charge of aggravated manslaughter.
Gregorio Hernandez, 28, was killed May 18, 2014 after Sanchez started shooting at men on Hale Street and hit Hernandez and another man sitting outside on a front stoop. The two were not the intended targets, according to police.
Hernandez was pronounced dead shortly later at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. The other man hit in the shooting survived.
Sanchez and two other city men were indicted in 2015 on charges of murder, aggravated manslaughter, manslaughter, aggravated assault, conspiracy to commit murder and possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose.
Sanchez and Manual Mendez were also charged with hindering their apprehension, witness tampering and obstruction of the administration of law.
The status of the charges against Mendez and the third man, Renee Herrera, were unknown.
