The girl, who has not been named, is accused of stabbing a fellow female student in or near the eye with a pair of scissors
EAST BRUNSWICK -- A 17-year-old girl has been charged with attempted murder in a stabbing at Middlesex County Vo-Tech Wednesday morning, authorities said.
The girl, who police did not name, is accused of stabbing a fellow student in or near the eye with a pair of scissors during an altercation in the girls' bathroom at the East Brunswick Vo-Tech campus, according to officials.
The girl is being charged as a juvenile on one count of attempted murder and one count of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey said in a release.
Middlesex County Vocational Technical School District Superintendent Brian Loughlin said the altercation was an isolated incident, and the student with the scissors, who allegedly started the altercation, was immediately taken into custody.
The 15-year-old who was stabbed was taken to University Hospital in Newark.
Her father told NJ Advance Media Thursday the teenager had been released and was doing OK.
"The stab didn't touch the brain," he said. "But it's too early to tell if there was any nerve damage because of the swelling. Her eye is stitched shut."
The father, who is not being named to protect the girl's identity, described the incident as an attack on his daughter over a boy.
The 17-year-old remains in Middlesex County Youth Detention Center in North Brunswick awaiting her appearance before a Superior Court judge in family court, according to Carey. Those proceedings are not open to the public.
School officials ordered a code blue after the incident and students sheltered in place for about an hour and 25 minutes, according to Loughlin.
"We didn't want kids to observe the medical treatment of a fellow student," Loughlin said.
Parents were notified of the incident through the district's emergency calling system.
Police are still investigating the altercation. Anyone with information can call 732-390-6900 or 732 745-3115.
