Officer justified in firing on driver during chase, officials say

The incident occurred last May when Rutgers University and Piscataway police tried to pull over Jeffrey Troxell, according to officials.

PISCATAWAY -- State and county officials ruled an officer was justified in firing on a South Amboy man who allegedly tried run over a cop during a chase through a cemetery in town.

The incident in question occurred last year when Rutgers University and Piscataway police tried to pull over Jeffrey Troxell, according to officials.

As part of the state's use-of-force guidelines, the state Attorney General's Office was notified and the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation into the incident.

The prosecutor's office said Tuesday the use of deadly force was justified, and the officer had completed all of his annual mandatory training.

According to authorities, the 50-year-old had refused to stop on May 18, 2016, and led police on a chase from New Brunswick into Resurrection Cemetery in Piscataway, where a funeral service was being held.

Police closed the gates to the cemetery and approached Troxell's 2002 Honda Accord, ordering him to exit the car, the prosecutor's office said in a statement.

Troxell refused and tried to drive away, when he allegedly hit one of the officers, according to authorities.

As the car came at him, the officer fired a single shot at Troxell and missed, according to the statement.

Troxell was eventually arrested when his car became stuck and another officer hit him with a Taser, police said.

Troxell was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, and two counts of eluding police, according to the prosecutor's office.

He is currently being held on $200,000 bail in Middlesex County jail, county officials said.
