The crash occurred at the intersection of the highway and North Oaks Boulevard and involved two cars and a box truck
NORTH BRUNSWICK -- A crash on Route 1 northbound Tuesday morning closed the highway to almost all traffic and left one person critical.
The crash occurred at 7:08 a.m. at the intersection of the highway and North Oaks Boulevard and involved two cars and a box truck, North Brunswick Capt. Brian Hoiberg said.
The drivers of the cars, who were the only passengers, were taken to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, where one remains in critical condition, according to Hoiberg.
A preliminary investigation found the driver of the truck was at fault in the incident and is cooperating with police, Hoiberg said.
Tamara Smith, who was in the Dunkin Donuts near the accident, said she heard the crash and saw a car get pushed through the intersection into the highway median.
"It's just a horrible scene," she said. "I just pray everyone is OK."
Police said in an alert at 11:45 a.m. that the accident was cleared and all lanes have been reopened on Route 1.
No charges have been filed and police are still investigating the incident that closed the highway northbound for more than three hours, according to Hoiberg
